Providence Heart Institute developed the Red Dress Campaign to alert women to the dangers of heart disease. The campaign uses the visual of a red dress to help communicate that heart disease is not just a man’s disease—it’s the number one cause of death among women. The American Heart Association estimates that heart disease kills 500,000 women in the U.S. each year, compared to 42,000 killed by breast cancer. Yet many women don’t perceive heart disease as their greatest health threat.

The Red Dress Campaign complements the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s nationwide public awareness campaign that uses a red dress as the centerpiece of its program. For questions or comments, please call us at (803) 256-5460, or e-mail us at info@provhosp.com. You can also read the stories women have shared about their experience with heart disease.

Providence Heart Institute, often called “South Carolina’s Heart Hospital,” is a leader in the fight against the state’s number one killer, heart disease. Since the Heart Institute’s opening in 1974, the staff at Providence has performed more heart procedures than any other medical team in the state. Each year, the facility’s skilled surgeons perform more than 1,000 open-heart surgeries. Last year, we performed nearly 7,000 cardiac catheterizations to diagnose and treat heart disease—more than any other hospital in South Carolina. And we’re consistently among the first to bring new technology to the state, including the new drug-eluting stent, a revolutionary device used to reopen blocked arteries.

Providence Heart Institute is one of three entities that comprise Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, a not-for-profit 322-bed organization owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine (CSA) Health System. Other members of the Providence family include Providence Hospital and Providence Hospital Northeast. Dedicated to its mission of serving the health care needs of our communities, Providence employs more than 1,500 caring individuals.
