On a bright sunny day members of the Mended Hearts Chapter 189 assembled at the SC State Museum for the American Heart Walk. Dressed in Providence white shirts with letters on the back "The Red Dress Campaign, Women and Heart Disease, Providence Heart Institute - Because Heart Disease Doesn't Discriminate", they set forth on the 2.8 mile route and about an hour later they completed their task with enthusiasm and spirit. Vice President Vince Bachetta finished the walk in a record 38 minutes. Jim McGrew, a Mended Hearts Member who passed away recently, was honored by the Mended Hearts walkers who wore signs on their shirts honoring him. Members of our Mended Hearts Chapter that were unable to make the walk came out and supported us and enjoyed the festivities.
On January 22, 2004, Tom Woods, Andy and Emma Dell McMahon met with the American Heart Association staff for the American Heart Walk. Volunteers were recruited and a letter writing campaign was started. Additional Committee members were Bill Malouche, Dora Mcgrew, Ray and Faye Efird, and Mary Alice Akers. Our team exceeded its goal of $3,000.00, raising $3,290.00 and topping all of the teams that represented Providence Hospital. These funds will be used for research and education to fight heart disease.
A special thanks to the Committee and the entire membership of the Mended Hearts Chapter 189 for their splendid support in helping us achieve our goal.
It was another great campaign.

Mended Hearts Chapter 189 was recognized for their stellar performance in raising funds for the 2004 American Heart Walk in Columbia, SC. The award was made at a Reception and Award Ceremony on Monday, May 10, 2004, at the Columbia Mall.
American Heart Walk Chairman Charley Dickerson presented the award to Andy McMahon, Heartwalk Chairman for Chapter 189, who accepted for the Mended Hearts team of Tom Woods, Bill Malouche, Mary Alice Akers, Dora McGrew, Ray and Faye Efird, Andy and Emma Dell McMahon, who were backed by the entire chapter membership, who gave generously and put us over the top.
At the monthly Chapter meeting on May 18, Andy presented the award to Co-President Ted Evans, Jr., who accepted it on behalf of the membership.
