It was windy and cold on a beautiful spring day when members of the Mended Hearts Chapter 189 assembled at the Colonial Center for the American Heart Walk. Dressed in our Providence Heart Institute red shirts with white lettering on the back, "A Healthy Heart is a Beautiful Thing", and "The Red Dress Campaign, Women and Heart Disease", they joined the parade of 4500 walkers and set forth on the 3.3 mile route.
About an hour and five minutes later they had completed their task with enthusiasm and spirit. Chapter Vice President Vince Bachetta finished in a record 45 minutes. Among the other walkers were Ted Evans, Mary Alice Akers, Dora McGrew and her sister Alsie Kelly and son, Michael; Andy and Emma Dell McMahon with their Grand Niece, Michelle Parsons.
At the last of January our committee met with the members of the American Heart Association staff for instructions and supplies. What followed was an extensive letter writing campaign by Ted Evans, Vincent Bachetta, Dora McGrew, Mary Alice Akers, Tom Woods, Ray and Faye Efird, Priscilla and Roland Davis, and Emma Dell and Andy McMahon with good results.
We have exceeded our goal of $4000.00 by raising $4,405.91. These funds will be used for research and education to fight heart disease.
A special thanks goes to the committee and the entire membership of the Mended Hearts Chapter 189 for their splendid support of the American Heart Walk.
It was another great campaign.
Andy McMahon, Chairman, Mended Hearts Chapter 189 American Heart Walk.
